Although most customers want to get the cheapest auto insurance
possible, there are some things that you absolutely should not skimp
on. One of those elements is the people you name on your insurance as
potential drivers of the vehicles you are then insuring. It would be
very easy to just name the policyholder as the only driver and save
some money, but the fact is, there are probably some people in the
household that will also be driving the vehicle occasionally. Even if
it is to just move cars around, if someone will get behind your wheels,
you should list them.
For a rule of thumb, you will want to list anyone that lives in the
same location with you at a minimum. This would include spouse,
domestic partner, child, roommate, friend or any other relationship
that is also in the same house with you. The fact is, if they are
behind the wheel and get into an accident things become much more
complicated if they are not listed as a driver. Although there are
other ways they might be covered (as well as your car), there is no
reason to risk it or put your car in the hands of chance.
When looking for your policy, check around for multi-driver
discounts to save you a bit when you add these drivers. No matter what,
the cost is pretty minimal to add additional drivers and is well worth
the potential savings in heart ache and expenses should a loved one
become involved in an accident. So when considering who to add and not
add to your policy, error on the side of more not less.
